We teach students to be proficient in piano, voice, bass, cello, violin, and guitar. Sight reading, shape notes, and musical composition. Additionally, ear training is accomplished by teaching students to audibly recognize intervals, and implementing a Roman Numeral system for chording. Two different teaching methods are used, largely contingent on a student's individual learning style (strong sight-readers stay with staff music, and students with a good ear stay with chording. All material is taught, but depending on the student, the order in which it's taught varies). Students are trained for performance. They have one formal recital in the winter, one informal recital at the beginning of summer, and we will perform when asked (at churches, nursing homes, etc.). There are also financial assistance programs available for families who are at a financial disadvantage. We efficiently place students into classes so that they can participate in ensemble teams, with a strong emphasis on teamwork and growing relationships with their peers. This gives them a head start on participating in choir, band, or orchestra in junior high/high school. Many of our students are placed in first chair within their first year in band or orchestra, as they have already learned about timing, dynamics, and general sight-reading. Our goal is to strengthen kids by teaching them new skills, help them develop relationships with like-minded peers, and teach them to reach out to those who are lonely or less fortunate - all through the practical use of music. Since 2008, we have been building up our youth; one note at a time.
