The Bernie Scholarship Awards Program (BSAP) raises money for scholarships offered to low-income residents of subsidized rental housing in Montgomery County, MD. Scholarships are given to high school students as they head toward college and adults as they pursue career training and education to prepare for employment or better employment. The program continues to grow and has provided over 500 scholarships totaling more than $600,000 as of May 2019. In 2009, BSAP became a component fund of the 501(c)(3) Greater Washington Community Foundation, which is accredited by the Council on Foundations and maintains a four-star Charity Navigator rating. BSAP is almost entirely volunteer-based, meaning that the majority of funds raised will be utilized as scholarships. All donations payable to The Bernie Scholarship Awards Program continue to be tax deductible.
