The Big Bike Film Night’s journey started from a moment of adversity back in 2014; a vandalised 3-metre Giant Bike Statue in my hometown of Taupō, New Zealand needed help restoring. Stirred to see this Bike Statue back up again, I took a BIG leap into the unknown and decided a film festival celebrating cycling in all its glorious shapes and forms was what was needed – turning a negative into a positive, this experience would celebrate the fun, the adventure, and the inspiration that cycling enabled. From these humble beginnings, I had people approaching me on the streets telling me “That was awesome, that was amazing, when are you doing the next one?” Ten years on, this ‘garage project’ has gone places, and grown, and grown, and grown! Tiki-touring widely across New Zealand, introduced “across the ditch” to our Australian cycling cousins in 2017, then embraced by the Scots since 2021, and relished by the bikety bike bike peeps on the Island of Guernsey since 2023, we’re going places! Curating these annual collections to delight two-wheel devotees has certainly garnered a reputation (or should that be notoriety) for being a little bit quirky and left field and I had someone describe our festival as “weird, wacky, and wonderful”; I couldn’t have said it better, myself! Each year as the Curatour of this Film Festival I seek out the best short cycling films from around the world; creating a memorable experience for our attendees on where the humble bicycle can take us.
