About The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS)
CIHRS was established in 1993 as an independent regional non-governmental organization working for the advancement of a deep-rooted human rights culture throughout Arab societies. CIHRS aspires to create meaningful change through the dissemination and education of human rights, regional and international advocacy, and human rights research and studies. For the past 3 decades, CIHRS utilized various vehicles including the Regional Forum for the Human Rights Movement, the Salon Ibn Rushd seminars, and similar events to disseminate human rights culture in the region. Additionally, CIHRS organized specialized training for journalists, activists, and lawyers and operated a 26-year-long human rights summer school for university students. CIHRS aspires to foster solidarity, enhance coordination and cooperation, build capacities, create strong alliances between national Human Rights NGOs, and strengthen ties between actors across the Arab region. In addition, CIHRS engages with regional and international decision makers, stakeholders, and mechanisms aiming to influence the international agenda toward human rights protection in the region. In parallel, CIHRS has continued its regional research activities, striving to bridge the information gap and lack of in-depth conversations caused by the unprecedented crackdown on freedom of expression across the region through its Annual Report on the Human Rights Situation in the Arab Region as well as the publication of research and analysis. In 2020, CIHRS compiled its publications into a free online library with 192 books and over 400 research papers. CIHRS has also published Two of the oldest journals specializing in human rights, Sawasiah and Rowaq Arabi. Today, Rowaq is a blind peer-reviewed academic electronic journal with 75 published issues containing over 700 studies on the region's main challenges to human rights reform.
