About The Carbon Trap Project
The Carbon Trap Project is a hands-on, community-driven environmental effort that empowers people to permanently trap atmospheric carbon in their own backyards. Our mission is simple but powerful: turn everyday waste into charcoal and return it to the earth where it belongs. Most carbon removal today happens at industrial scale or through purchased offsets that are difficult to verify. Composting and tree planting have benefits, but their carbon impact is uncertain, temporary, or hard to measure. By contrast, carbon trapping through charcoal is tangible, permanent, and easy to quantify. If you can weigh the charcoal you create, you know exactly how much carbon you have locked away. Our simplest system uses renewable, carbon-free electricity—solar, wind, hydro, or nuclear—to convert biomass like yard waste, sawdust, coffee grounds, etc. into charcoal. Once cooled, the charcoal can be placed with household trash and carried to the landfill, where it will be buried permanently. The garbage trucks are already going there, so no additional carbon footprint is created. This is not about selling offsets or credits. It is about teaching, equipping, and inspiring people to take direct action in their own homes and communities. When individuals act together at scale, the results can be dramatic. If just a fraction of households who composted last year also made charcoal once a year, we would trap more carbon than some of the largest industrial direct air capture plants operating today. The Carbon Trap Project provides the foundation for this movement: practical guidance, tested systems, and a community of people working together to put carbon back into the ground. There is strength in numbers. Together, we can make a measurable contribution to climate mitigation, one handful of charcoal at a time.
