About The Center for Safe & Healthy Children
The Center for Safe & Healthy Children exists to provide a safe and caring place utilized by professionals who investigate and guide these children and their families through the legal and healing process in the least traumatic way. While sexual abuse cases are all automatically referred to The Center, physical abuse cases also come by way of recommendation by the caseworker or law enforcement. The Center for Safe & Healthy Children works to minimize further trauma to children who have suffered abuse or neglect by providing a multidisciplinary response of prevention, intervention, and advocacy. The Center works to prevent child abuse by raising awareness of human trafficking and sexual and physical abuse in the community. It accomplishes this goal by giving presentations to various groups, hosting fundraisers, and speaking at schools. Once a case is brought to light, The Center: Assists the prosecutors in obtaining a recorded interview to be used in court. Brings in pediatricians to perform a comprehensive medical exam which the families may not be able to afford. Arranges for trauma therapy counselors to meet with the children and their families to start the healing process. Along with conducting interviews, representatives from various local offices meet every two weeks to review cases and to discuss the next steps. The Center also holds a monthly statewide peer review where trained forensic interviewers in Hancock County meet with others around the state to improve their interviewing skills. The Center for Safe & Healthy Children is the only Accredited Child Advocacy Center in a 35 mile radius. Without it, families and children in Hancock County would have no guidance or support through an immensely difficult time in their lives. The legal process would be harder on the children, and would result in fewer prosecutions. By providing the proper care, assistance, and resources, The Center plays a crucial role in keeping our children safe.
