About The Children's Book Bank Canada
The Children’s Book Bank is a non-profit that provides free books and literacy support to children in high-needs neighbourhoods across Toronto. Our purpose is to provide equal access to books for all children, thereby improving literacy rates and socioeconomic outcomes. The Book Bank employs a sustainable model, soliciting donations of new and gently-used books from individuals, organizations, and publishers. Books are then redistributed through our community spaces and outreach programs. We currently operate four community spaces—in Regent Park, St. Jamestown, Morningside, and the Jane and Finch neighbourhood—that resemble children's bookstores. Children, teens, and their families can visit on a drop-in basis as often as they like and select a free book to take home with each visit. The books do not need to be returned giving families to opportunity to build their own home libraries. The Book Bank also distributes free books to 150 community partners including food banks, shelters, schools, and other like-minded organizations. Since 2008, The Children’s Book Bank has provided more than 1.5 million books to children in need.
