About The Civil Discourse Project

The polarization of our society has reached dangerous levels. The constant flow of incendiary rhetoric is dividing us and turning us against each other. America’s framers created a system of government to force competing groups to negotiate with each other to achieve anything. People who embrace divisiveness no longer believe in that system. By demonizing other points of view, they close the door on negotiation, rendering a functional democracy impossible. We only have a short window in which to right the ship. Our Solution: While many political groups have sprung up to save democracy, we are taking a different approach: We are building a technology platform—not a political organization. Rather than amplifying people’s outrage as social media does, we will harness the outrage and redirect it towards reducing polarization. We want to give ordinary people a sense of purpose and give them the power to impact the ability of divisive candidates to attract donors and win their party’s nomination. The Civil Discourse Project aims to attract both moderate & extreme voters, and then use behavioral psychology to get them to reject divisive candidates in their own party’s primaries. How it works: Our platform aims combines the network effects of crowdsourcing with the power of behavioral psychology. Our platform will harness voter outrage to feed our platform with potentially divisive content from other sources. It will then assess those statements through a crowdsourced collaboration process similar to Wikipedia and StackOverflow. Our goal is to change the political climate by making candidates think twice before employing divisive rhetoric.
