About The Compass School

The Compass School is a K–8 public charter school located on a historic 20-acre farm in Kingston, RI, less than a mile from the state university. Founded in 2002, Compass is committed to cultivating thoughtful, compassionate leaders through hands-on learning, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility. Students are admitted through a statewide lottery and benefit from a rich, project-based curriculum that integrates academics with real-world problem-solving. As a U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School, Compass models sustainable practices throughout campus life—from composting and zero-waste lunch initiatives to student-led environmental projects. The school is home to Rhode Island’s largest school garden, complete with nearly 5,000 square feet of raised garden beds, farm animals, a greenhouse, a high tunnel, an orchard, shaded outdoor classrooms and an amphitheater. Compass also serves as a resource for educators and community partners across the state. Through outreach, farm-based internships, after-school programs, and educator trainings, the school shares best practices in sustainability education and place-based learning. With small class sizes, a collaborative culture, and a deep commitment to student voice, The Compass School empowers learners to think critically, act responsibly, and engage meaningfully with the world around them.
