About The Council of the Inns of Court (COIC)
The Council of the Inns of Court (COIC) is a charity that exists to advance education in the sound administration of the law, including by promoting high standards of advocacy and enforcing professional standards of conduct. Whilst having existed for many years as a committee supporting the work of the four Inns of Court, it became a charitable organisation in 2014. COIC, on behalf of the four Inns, also offers responses to various consultations relevant to advocacy and the practice of the Bar. COIC’s mission is to promote the rule of law through excellent advocacy COIC oversees the work of its subsidiary organisations or “operational arms”, namely: The Bar Tribunal and Adjudication Service (BTAS) - BTAS is responsible for appointing and administering disciplinary tribunals for barristers facing charges of professional misconduct and disciplinary cases. It also organises hearings to consider misconduct by student members of, or applicants to, the Inns of Court, and whether this means they are ‘fit and proper’ individuals to become practising barristers. The Inns of Court College of Advocacy (ICCA) - ICCA provides leadership, guidance and coordination in relation to the pursuit of excellence in advocacy, in the UK and internationally. ICCA aims to become the global centre of excellence in the study and practice of advocacy and ethics. Its vision is to become the recognised authority for advocacy training. The Advocates’ Gateway (TAG) - The Advocate's Gateway is a web based resource designed to give advocates free and practical, evidence-based guidance for working with witnesses and defendants with communications needs. TAG aims to: • promote excellence in the justice system's approach to vulnerable witnesses and defendants • collaboratively develop research-led best practice, and • provide educational materials online and via conferences and seminars.
