Starting as a small one-man store on Broadway & 26th Street, Mortimer Levitt founded The Custom Shop in 1937. The first 5 stores were all located in New York City.Mortimer expanded The Custom Shop. Along with the famous red and white awning that still is a staple of The Custom Shop logo, each of the stores had imitation torch lamps that burned yellow. This enabled the stores to be seen for many blocks. The Custom Shop has a national footprint consisting of retail stores and service centers in Washington, D.C., Houston, TX, San Francisco, CA, Birmingham, MI, and Toledo, OH along with a direct sales force in numerous other major markets.
