Diaper need is a lack of a sufficient supply of diapers to keep a child clean, dry, and healthy. There are no government programs that pay for or provide diapers. Even WIC and Bridge Cards do not allow their resources to be used to purchase diapers. The Diaper Alliance (TDA) was originally formed as the Midland Community Diaper Bank in 2010 with the goal of collecting diapers and providing them free of charge to one or two partner agencies in Midland that work with families in financial crisis. TDA now provides diapers to over 40 partner agencies within the Great Lakes Bay Region, including Midland, Saginaw, Bay, and Clare counties, at a rate of over 65,000 diapers per month (over 725,000 per year) for over 1,000 children. As of March 2017, The Diaper Alliance has distributed over 2-million diapers to families in need. The diapers are stored at TDA’s warehouse in Midland, where volunteers repackage the diapers into bundles and prepare orders for the distribution network. Partner agencies pick up their monthly orders each month and then distribute the diapers to their registered clients, families whose incomes vary from below poverty to low income. Each child can receive 60 diapers per month, which is approximately one-third of their need. TDA also provides incontinence supplies to senior citizens in need. In 2016, the Diaper Alliance increased its distribution to over double what it provided in past years. This expansion was made possible by the relationship TDA has with the National Diaper Bank Network (NDBN) and NDBN's founding sponsor, Huggies. The approximate retail value of the diapers we distributed in 2016 was $210,000. Our cost was $17,000, total. TDA is the only operating diaper bank in the Great Lakes Bay Region and there are no other local, state, or federal programs that provide diapers. TDA is also the only diaper bank in Michigan selected as a community partner with the NDBN.
