About The Electrode Company
The Electrode Company Ltd. (TEC) is a completely self-financed private company wholly owned by its two founders - Dr GR Mathews and Dr VM Hickson. Both founding directors share a life-long fascination and passion for science and medicine. Our aim is to improve medical benefits and efficiencies by giving medical professionals better information for clinical decisions. We passionately believe that the first priority is to always do what is in the best interest of the patient. Our credibility comes from TEC's complete independence from pulse oximeter manufacturers and from maintaining the very best scientific and medical expertise and delivery of the highest quality service. Pulse oximetry is used in hospitals and is often critical in decision making. About 30% of pulse oximeter sensors used are so inaccurate that people are at risk of getting wrong treatment. Worldwide hospitals are solving this problem with The Lightman®. The Electrode Company has specialised in pulse oximetry for over 27 years and developed some of the early patents in pulse oximetry. We currently design and manufacture unique pulse oximetry calibration technology for checking pulse oximeter sensor accuracy. Recent research has shown that patient outcomes can be improved by checking pulse oximeter sensor accuracy. Contrary to the practice with most other Medical Devices, pulse oximeter accuracy and calibration is rarely if ever checked. However in the UK, surveys and audits of pulse oximeter sensors show that about 1 in 3 are not suitable for use. The International Standard recognizes that there is widespread confusion regarding methods of checking accuracy. Many users and engineers mistakenly believe that simulators and functional testers check accuracy – but they do not and cannot. We specialize in hand held spectrometers known as The Lightman ® - the only device capable of assessing the accuracy of pulse oximeter sensors.
