THE EMPEROR NORTON TRUST is a nonprofit, founded in San Francisco, that works on a variety of fronts — research, education, advocacy — to advance the legacy of Joshua Abraham Norton (1818-1880), best known as the San Francisco eccentric and sometime visionary, Emperor Norton. The mission of the Trust includes historical and cultural research and documentation; public education; and cultural visioning. John Lumea founded the Trust in 2013 as The Emperor’s Bridge Campaign. The impetus for the launch of the Campaign was Lumea's August 2013 Change.org petition calling on the California legislature to add "Emperor Norton Bridge" as an honorary name for the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The Emperor set out the original vision for the bridge in 1872. The petition (http://chn.ge/1eu7qju) is at nearly 6,200 signatures and counting. The Campaign was based in San Francisco through the end of 2019. The Trust adopted its current name in December 2019 and relocated its base to Boston in February 2020. The Trust's website features more than 100 research articles by John Lumea, as well as two other resources created and maintained by Lumea: the interactive, annotated Emperor Norton Map of the World and the digital ARchive of Emperor Norton in Art, Music & Film (ARENA). Also, the Trust has produced regular events (talks, walks, commemorations) on various aspects of the life and legacy of Emperor Norton. The Trust continues to provide leadership and inspiration for the bridge-naming effort (see http://www.EmperorNortonBridge.org) as part of its larger mission.
