About The Gadsden Company
In 2006, Kira Dixon-Weinstein, Adam Weinstein and Jerry Dixon founded Gadsden Company, LLC, a local, family-owned real estate investment and urban development company with a core focus on community in Tucson, Arizona. At Gadsden, we believe that it is our responsibility to actively participate in strengthening and growing local communities and to preserve and enrich desert life by using environmentally, socially and economically sustainable building processes. Inspired by our love of Tucson’s history, architecture, culture and community, and based on a vision by Justin Dixon (who created the pedestrian-oriented neighborhood plan), we had a shared concept: to establish Tucson’s first and only Public Market District, and to incubate local and regional businesses within a walkable, transit-oriented, residential neighborhood. When we envision the future of Tucson’s West side, we see connections: the Mercado Districts’ tree-lined streets, buildings, plazas and the streetcar that bridges the gap between downtown’s East and West sides. But our development has a farther-reaching goal: to bridge the intangible gap between Tucson’s growth and our diverse community. Our vision is a reunion of our city’s urban traditions, culture and ecological values with our creative, technological and structural development. Considered the birthplace of Tucson, indigenous people first began cultivating the area home to the Mercado District along the Santa Cruz River. Modern, mismanaged agricultural development depleted the river, and it eventually became a wastewater channel and landfill. Seeing through development obstacles, and after an extensive waste clean-up, the Gadsden team worked in partnership with the Menlo Park Neighborhood Association to restore the land. We strove to preserve and honor the cultural heritage and history, and provide the neighboring residents and all of Tucson a revitalized locale. Today, the Mercado District offers a welcoming sense of place.
