About The Globe Lane Initiative (GLI)

The Globe Lane Initiative (GLI) is a US 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting history and cultural exchange, inspired by the legacy and example of Frederick Douglass. We cultivate partnerships, develop understandings and build connections to history across a broad range of communities to inspire change. We educate and inspire individuals from all backgrounds through access to historical resources, cultural programming and community engagement opportunities that highlight enduring contributions to the intertwined struggles for equality, liberation and justice. GLI is proudly rooted in Ireland; our name honors the place in Cork where Douglass first spoke. We solicit creative contributions from Irish communities at home and abroad, provide important insights into Irish history for Americans curious about their Irish ancestry. Our activities benefit the Irish community in a variety of ways, drawing on Douglass’s values and example to celebrate intercultural exchange and harness the power of history as precedent and perspective for contemporary social challenges. GLI is women-led and directed by a diverse 11-member board committed to connectedness, co-creation and collaboration and to our uniting themes of knowledge, empowerment, hope and transformation.
