About The Good Rice Alliance
Agricultural management is an important tool for climate change mitigation as greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural activities and land use, primarily carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) contribute about 12% to global emissions (FAOSTAT 2020). Agricultural land also stores vast amounts of carbon in soil organic matter, which is relevant for emission reductions as well as additional carbon sequestration. Since methane emissions from rice paddies are the highest emissions from cropland and the second highest source in agriculture, surpassed only by emissions from enteric fermentation in livestock, but higher than emissions from manure. The amounts of methane and nitrous oxide emitted from the rice paddies are strongly linked to the practices (flooding and fertilizing) applied by the rice farmers. The primary objective of The Good Rice Alliance (TGRA) is to address the water- and methane-intensive cultivation practices in rice farming, aiming to reduce GHG emissions by implementing agricultural practices that minimize the anaerobic decomposition of organic matter. TGRA focuses on transitioning rice cultivation from the conventional continuous flooding method to more sustainable practices such as Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) and Direct Seeded Rice (DSR). In AWD, fields are alternately flooded and non-flooded, with irrigation applied only after the ponded water has receded, leading to significant water applied. In DSR rice seeds are directly sown into the field, eliminating the need for puddling and traditional nursery-based transplanting, resulting into reduced need for flooding. TGRA is promoting climate-smart practices specific to the region together with scientific assessment by identified technical partners.
