About The Gorilla Organization
The Gorilla Organization works at the forefront of gorilla conservation with innovative and award-winning projects in Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo. Its field staff in Africa, supported by fundraising and communications teams in London, oversee a range of grassroots conservation projects, all of them aimed at addressing the key threats facing gorillas today. From the beginning, the Gorilla Organization has recognised the importance of tackling the root causes of threats such as habitat loss and poaching. That's why, as well as supporting rangers in their vital work protecting gorillas from poachers' snares, projects include organic farming and gorilla-friendly beekeeping, both initiatives that give people the opportunity to earn a sustainable income without having to rely on the natural resources found in the forest. At the same time, conservation education projects such as radio programmes, children's wildlife clubs and portable pedal-powered cinemas showing great ape films spread the message of gorilla conservation to communities across East Africa. For more than two decades, the Gorilla Organization has worked to save the world's last remaining gorillas in the wild from extinction, carrying on through genocide, natural disasters and war. As The Economist has said: "In insecure areas, charities like the Gorilla Organization end up doing the hard work". Its projects have gone from strength to strength, transforming the lives of thousands of people in some of Africa's poorest communities and building a brighter future for the gorillas they live alongside.
