.We are a mental health foundation focused on improving self-care, childhood resilience. Our programs address mental health illness, homelessness, grooming, support and promote healing and self-sufficiency in adulthood. So far, we have been able to serve over 1000 black youth in South Bronx’s District 9 and they are presently living out their best lives. I am Charles McCoy, founder of The Grooming Alchemist Foundation, and I am passionate about providing safe spaces for men to take care of, and improve their mental health. In 2003 I moved from Oklahoma City to New York in pursuit of my dreams of starting a business, beginning with opening up my own barbershop. Though I had much success, opening two barber shops in Manhattan with dedicated clientele like Spike Lee, I struggled with finding safe spaces to grapple with any anxiety or stress I carried being a young Black man who’s endured trauma. I started the Grooming Alchemist Foundation to provide an avenue for young men, particularly men of color, to have moments of mental wellness and pause. Nearly 1 in 10 men experience some form of depression or anxiety, but less than half seek treatment. In 2020, men died by suicide 3.88x more than women. Though men experience a higher rate of suicide, they are less likely to seek help and more prone to suffering in silence. Suicide rates among youth and teens are higher than ever, and for ages 10-24, it’s the second leading cause of death. For Black youth, suicide rates are increasing faster compare to other racial groups. At Grooming Alchemist Foundation, our Mission is to support youth of color struggling with suicide thoughts, depression, hopelessness, and other aspects of mental illness thereby helping them unlock the next level of their lives whether in their career or personal lives.
