About The HAB
The HAB is a social enterprise founded by a team of students from Wageningen University & Research, combining space-inspired innovation with climate-smart agriculture. Our first product, AstroGel, is a biodegradable, reusable plant growth medium made from carbon-sequestering seaweed. Designed to replace peat—a soon-to-be-banned agricultural substrate in the EU—AstroGel addresses urgent needs in both commercial indoor farming and household food production. AstroGel is shipped in lightweight powdered form, expanding with water into a self-watering, mess-free substrate. It reduces CO₂ emissions by 65% compared to peat, supports marine biodiversity, and avoids land conversion to agriculture. It also lowers labor costs by eliminating the need for watering during the plant cycle. Hydrogels have been utilized aboard the International Space Station (ISS) to grow fresh greens in microgravity . As astronauts are busy with numerous tasks and are not specialized plant scientists, hydrogels were designed to be extremely low maintenance. AstroGel is: ● Non-toxic, food-grade, and edible ● Low cost ● Low labor/low maintenance ● Lightweight and compact ● Reusable ● Based on a renewable, carbon-sequestering ingredient
