About The Haven Newberry

The Haven Newberry is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the development of the youth of Newberry County in the areas of conflict resolution, financial literacy, general life skills, and college and career readiness. By hosting events and providing mentorship and leadership, we build positive connections with the youth. Through love, we are dedicated to helping each other grow, and forming meaningful relationships that will improve Newberry and surrounding communities. The Haven Newberry was created by four friends from Newberry County: Amir Cromer, Jaleel Gilliam, Daniel Goings, and Darius Stephens-York. All 2018 graduates of Newberry High School, the founders felt called to become more visible to the younger generation and offer mentorship. The founders noticed a lack of positive outlets for youth in the community, so they began creating activities for middle school and high school students. During the summer of 2022, The Haven Newberry met weekly on Fridays at a local coffee shop. During those morning meetings, each student was given an opportunity to not only learn tangible skills but to also build relationships with their peers and older people from the community. Since then, The Haven Newberry has garnered widespread support from community leaders, businesses, and other organizations and continues to add new mentors and volunteers to its staff.
