About The HBCU Nation
President Obama has called for a major increase in the number of college graduates to support American competitiveness globally. The HBCU Nation is a non-profit advocacy initiative founded in 2012, committed to answering that “call”. We have literally adopted the theme of the President’s Executive Order 13532 as our vision “to promote HBCU excellence, innovation and sustainability. With a current enrollment of 300,000 students, the President recognizes that Historical Black Colleges and Universities figure prominently in America being able to achieve its higher education goals. We have adopted as our mission statement, the charge given to the U.S. Department of Education by the President, the five core tasks, as outlined in Executive Order 13532. We also pledge our earnest support to the President’s Board of Advisors on the HBCU Initiative in the following areas: (I) improving the identity, visibility, and distinctive capabilities and overall competitiveness of HBCUs; (II) engaging the philanthropic, business, government, military, home-land security and education communities in a national dialogue regarding new HBCU programs and initiatives; (III) improving the ability of HBCUs to remain fiscally secure institutions that can assist the Nation in reaching its goal of having the highest proportion of college graduates by 2020; (IV) elevating the public awareness of HBCUs; and (V) encouraging public-private investments in HBCUs.
