About The Heart of Yoga Foundation

Heart of Yoga Association is an organisation dedicated to sharing Yoga education with humanity, the primordial tantra by which each person can be intimate with Life itself. We maintain and share the yoga given to us by our teachers, T. Krishnamacharya and T.K.V. Desikachar, refined through their friendships with J and UG Krishnamurti, and expressed for modern westerners by founder Mark Whitwell. The Heart of Yoga is not a brand or style, even if some use it like this, but a movement or set of principles that aim to empower each person with the tools to practice their yoga in the way that is unique to them. Our focus is on empowering each person in a daily home practice sadhana of hathayoga, the union of opposites that reveals the source of opposites, the hridaya or heart. This is the hope for humanity. We are dedicated to making yoga accessible to all regardless of money, geography, age, health or culture. We are a non-profit dedicated to education around the world, including offering scholarships to train as yoga teachers for those in challenged circumstances. We offer workshops and trainings around the world, online courses, resources for teachers, mentoring and support for teachers to step out of the commercialised yoga industrial complex, and make the breath the central focus of their practice and teaching. We also work to support and raise awareness of Hindustani classical music, traditional yantra arts, and the traditional role of the guru as "no more than a friend, no less than a friend," not an authority or boss, not an exploiter of any kind. Our goal is to urgently share the tools for everyone to practice and feel that they ARE indeed the power of the cosmos, an embedded part of reality itself, and therefore behave better, before humanity brings about its own demise. Based in the USA for many years, the Heart of Yoga is now worldwide but with a base in Aotearoa New Zealand.
