Have you ever dreamed you were walking through a house? Perhaps the house was familiar, a memory resurfacing in your dream. Perhaps the house was unknown, every room a mystery. The house in our dreams is an expression of our inner self. From the basement to the attic, every room represents a part of our past or future identity – a memory or a possibility. The house we visit while sleeping is as personal as the house we live in while we’re awake. Both are a reflection of our life – past, present, and future. A real house should provide shelter, security, and privacy, and support its occupants’ well-being and relationships in safe and intimate spaces. Over time, such a house and its contents become a historical record of the individuals who lived there. The style of the house, the interior furniture, the memorabilia on the walls, even the trees in the garden all illustrate what family life was like. Sadly, houses fall victim to developers, road builders, poor seasons, changing lifestyles, mobile populations and fate. They live on only in old photos, memory, and dreams. Once those that remember are gone, so is the experience of living in that house in that time and place. We lose a valuable historical record of family life. But there is an alternative. Our passion is researching architectural drawings, old photographs, personal recollections, historical artifacts, pattern books, land titles, restoration guides, heritage listings, real estate sales, state records, council archives, and libraries for information about a lost house. We walk about a neighbourhood photographing contemporary examples that still stand so we know how the house might have looked in its prime. Then we build the house again – in virtual reality.
