THE HAIRDRESSING INDUSTRY is a community interest company dedicated to raising awareness of the benefits of hairdressing, both socially and to individual mental health and wellbeing; of the value of the hairdressing sector to the UK economy; and of the routes into, and benefits of, a career in hairdressing. Hairdressing is lucrative – over £6.3bn is spent in British salons and barber shops every year. Hairdressing is powerful – the biggest employer in the British beauty industry, supporting 121,400 jobs. Hairdressing is entrepreneurial – boasting double the UK average business owners aged 25 and under. It’s resilient – 74% of salons make it past their first five years. And yet hairdressing is still perceived as a low-skill, ‘last-resort’ career, rarely promoted as a viable option for school leavers. This needs to change. Our site www.the-industry.co.uk is an educational resource to inform and inspire those considering, or simply curious about, a career in the hairdressing industry. Alongside information on the qualifications you need and how to obtain them, it also shares stories from people who have already joined the hairdressing craft: salon owners running successful businesses on the British high street; session artists travelling the world, working with Chanel, styling for Vogue and handling the hair of Gigi Hadid; colourists painting masterpieces on the canvas of hair; and those incredible everyday stylists who transform our lives, be it by boosting our confidence or simply by offering a listening ear… Hairdressing is a creative, inclusive, passionate community and it’s looking for new members.
