About The InSitu Group
The InSitu Group was founded in 1984 to provide direct push technology (DPT) services to the geotechnical and environmental communities. Since then, the company has worked on numerous state-of-the-art projects worldwide. Subsurface investigations and instrumentation projects employing computer-based systems are the core of the firm's work. The InSitu Group has developed many cutting-edge systems, often using in-house developed software for measurement and control. The majority of the company's work today involves services based on heavy-weight DPT. While the market for lightweight DPT equipment, known as "GeoProbe" systems, is well-established, the company specializes in high-capacity DPT. Its rigs have pushing capacities exceeding 20 tons. Direct Push Technology is a methodology where tools and instruments are pushed, rather than drilled, into the earth to measure and/or sample subsurface soil and groundwater. The InSitu Group's primary and most recognized DPT tool is the static cone penetrometer (CPT, ASTM D-5778), developed in Europe over 100 years ago. Early CPT involved simply jacking a pointed rod or pipe into the soil and recording the necessary pushing forces, which were later correlated to soil density or stiffness. Later CPT developments enabled the measurement of friction and subsurface water pressure, vastly improving understanding of soil type, strength, and aquifer characteristics. The CPT instrument used by the InSitu Group is manufactured by D-P Technology to the highest standards and calibrated per ASTM procedures immediately after production, after every repair, and at intervals not exceeding six months.
