About The Institute for Climate Innovation
Many developed and developing country governments have made commitments to addressing the global climate emergency. While the ensuing international “grand gestures” like the Paris Agreements and the COP meetings are certainly necessary, they are insufficient to deliver granular, real-world change. At the country-level, existing innovation frameworks prioritize national interests, a design pattern which conflicts with the inherently trans-border nature of the climate emergency. The insufficiency of this traditional approach is evidenced by reports from real world decision-makers, who cite knowledge, coordination, and lack of transparency as the primary barriers to their transition efforts. We conclude that the global innovation ecosystem, as currently configured, is not up to the rapid deployment of the most effective climate innovation, and itself requires innovative re-design to meet the unprecedented requirements of the climate challenge. In this talk, the just-launched Institute for Climate Innovation presents a new approach for spurring innovation and transition initiatives internationally and across sectors, by connecting commercial requirements directly to innovators, facilitating the funding and dissemination of high-impact technologies, and liaising with governments to provide clarity for market activation in developed economies and suitable solutions for sustainable economies in developing countries. With its global hub at the University of Cambridge and regional hubs worldwide, the ICI structure and methodology is explicitly focused to: facilitate collaborative action research and implementation; identify and rank of the most viable climate innovations annually; organize industry-led scaling projects and pivot projects to define new pathways for transition; bring clarity to the innovation market with a set of 16 measurements for Climate Innovation Viability; and support open IP access for the developing world to adopt resulting technologies.
