About The IYRC
The IYRC encourages students to tackle issues in their local community by conducting evidence-based, cost-effective interventions that are impactful, sustainable, and reproducible initiatives. The conference hopes to help students make a difference and grow as civically minded leaders for the future. Learning outcomes are bidirectional, fostering interdisciplinary and intergenerational collaboration between mentees and mentors. This is the third Medicine and Research program hosted by Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Global Health Organization. Students learn from physicians, researchers, and medical students at Columbia University VP&S about diverse topics of medicine: they learn how to take a patient history, interview several standardized patients, engage in ethical discussions, have conversations about narrative medicine, and study various systems of human anatomy. In addition to the clinical aspects of the program, students learn research methods for finding sources, analyzing data, and writing a manuscript. By program completion, students should be able to search databases for journals, recognize gaps in the literature, and produce high-quality publishable papers. Students leave the program understanding the art of taking a patient history, the impact of social determinants of health, and the importance of a patient-centered, open-ended approach.
