About The Kidney Project
The Kidney Project team is striving to give kidney patients the health, mobility, and quality of life they need to move beyond the burdens of dialysis and organ shortage. The implantable bioartificial kidney (iBAK) replicates the key functions of a healthy kidney using biocompatible silicon nanopore membranes to filter the blood and a bioreactor that supports functional renal tubule cells to reabsorb water. We recently combined the hemofilter and bioreactor into a single prototype for the first time. We showed that the two components work together as intended to filter the blood and produce urine. This result confirms that our concept works and can be scaled up for future clinical trials. Thank you to our funders, advocates, and patient community for your continued support. We hear your voices, and continue to work our hardest to bring this device to patients as soon as possible.
