About The Light Inside

The Light Inside (TLI) is a non-profit organization which take a powerful meditation training program to jails and prisons across the US. TLI believes incarcerated people and those working in the corrections system benefit from a meditation technique which heals toxic stress accumulated over a life-time. Releasing and healing stress leads to reduced anger, frustration and aggression and improves patience, equanimity and calm. We all affect those around us, so it follows that meditation has a calming ripple effect on the families, friends, colleagues and communities of those who meditate. The Light Inside was founded by Joh Jarvis who in 2020 began teaching meditation to mentally ill men incarcerated in Rikers Island jail. Since then TLI's work has expanded to the wider Rikers Island's population where more than 100 men in maximum security have sat the 4-class meditation training. TLI has also trained nearly 100 corrections staff, officer and incarcerated residents in North Dakota's state penitentiary and the Heart River (women's) Correctional Centre in Mandan. The Light Inside's meditation training is funded through both donations, grants and state contracts.
