About The Lions Foundation
In 2019 Stichting Leeuw has opened The Lions Foundation, a lion sanctuary located in the beautiful Schrikkloof Nature Reserve in South Africa. The Lions Foundation takes care of big cats from emergency situations. Many of these cats were rescued from circuses, zoos, war situations and private possession by Stichting Leeuw in the Netherlands and were rehabilitated and relocated to The Lions Foundation Rescue and Conservation Centre. The big cats at The Lions Foundation have found their final home in their natural habitat, living in large enclosures on 1.5 hectares of savannah with natural bushes and trees. This "semi-wild" environment offers them peace after their difficult lives in circuses or as ‘pets’. However, they cannot be released into the wild due to their lack of hunting skills, some of them were bottle-fed, declawed, or defanged, making it impossible for them to survive on their own. So far, The Lions Foundation has already given shelter to dozens of big cats. Currently, around 30 big cats are sheltered at the foundation, and plans are in place to expand this number to 70 by 2028. South Africa is home to rich biological diversity, but many animals are suffering due to human actions. Big cats are used for breeding, entertainment, or abandoned by parks; donkeys face abuse or neglect; monkeys are exploited or separated from their mothers; rhinos are poached, leaving their young orphaned. The Lions Foundation is working hard to rescue these animals from their harsh conditions. Saving these animals costs a lot of money, we can really use your financial help. The sanctuary offers an excellent opportunity for volunteers to work with big cats and other wildlife. Dedicated volunteers are needed year-round to help care for the animals. Those interested in joining the volunteer program can contact the foundation for more information via volunteer@thelionsfoundation.com https://thelionsfoundation.com/volunteering/
