About The Little House of Happiness Craft Emporium
I'm Claire, after spending 20 year as a Royal Air Force Officer, I retired and started up my own business - The Little House of Happiness Craft Empoprium. A creative consultancy with a mission to encourage us to just 'Do what makes you Happy'. Mostly, I crochet! I only started to crochet in 2014. I was living in the Falkland Islands and there isn’t the variety of things to do that you get in the UK. It’s a very down-to-earth way of life and traditional crafts and skills are a major part of the way of life on the Islands. We spent 2 years living there because I was in the military and I was posted there - the whole family came too. It was like living in a David Attenborough series with the wildlife and during a visit to Bleaker Island a friend asked if anyone wanted to learn to crochet. They were making poppies for Remembrance and needed as many as possible to sell and raise money for the Royal British Legion. And that was it, I was hooked and my love for crochet started. The journey from there to where I am now (via a bit of TV work too) is definitely one for chatting about over a coffee and some cake. I describe crocheting as fancy knotting. You use a hook and yarn and each stitch is about wrapping the yarn around the hook once, twice, three times to change the length of a stitch, linking stitches together, leaving gaps. It’s different to knitting, it only uses one hook and usually completes one stitch at a time, unlike knitting where you have 2 needles and can have a ridiculous amount of stitches on the go all at once. You make a mistake in knitting and it’s a lot of work to rectify it. I find crochet much more forgiving of mistakes. That’s probably one of the reasons it really appeals – because I make so many!
