About The Mood Disorders Support Group of Guelph
Founded in the early 1990s, The Mood Disorders Support Group of Guelph, Has provided a safe place for peer-to-peer support outside the traditional clinical setting to share and learn from those within the Mental Health community. Members and newcomers alike find common ground around their various Mood, Thought & Behavioural diagnoses’. The MDSGG has evolved to be inclusive of not only Mental Health issues but also intersections in society that bring added challenges to one’s overall health and well-being. Our Founders, current members of the board, as well as Facilitators, offer programming within a community setting for those who have had challenges either finding help in the medical community directly or those who have found their experiences detrimental to obtaining the help they are searching for. Fast Forward to 2023, in the wake of a post-pandemic society and a fast-paced online and social media world, new challenges are faced head-on daily. We at the Mood Disorders Support Group of Guelph recognize the need for overall mental health & Well-being support even outside of “traditional” spaces geared toward a single-minded vision. As we grow and adapt with our new highly traumatic stress-inducing world and 24-hour media bombardment we see the need for inclusivity within our realm of understanding as well. There are many aspects of society that go hand-in-hand with Mental Health; Community segments, such as LGTBQ2s+ and BIPOC areas as well as intersections of which, many that have fallen through the cracks in an already over-stressed/ overwhelmed medical system. More examples: would include, but are not limited to Youth & an Ageing populace, Homelessness & the Cost of Living, Drugs, Addiction & the Undiagnosed, Pre & Post incarceration, and Social Justice spaces that in many ways get overlooked and ignored by society at large.
