About The National Business League

Founded on August 23, 1900, by the legendary Dr. Booker T. Washington, The National Business League (NBL) is the nation’s first and largest independent, not-for-profit trade association dedicated to the success and growth of Black-owned businesses and professionals. Originally called the National Negro Business League, the NBL has been a global leader in advancing economic equity and driving measurable impact for generations. Representing 3.6 million Black-owned businesses, the NBL supports a sector that contributes $206 billion annually to the U.S. economy and creates 3.5 million jobs. Black women are the fastest-growing entrepreneurial segment, and with two-thirds of Black business owners under 40, the NBL fosters innovation and opportunity for the next generation of leaders shaping the future of business. Headquartered in Tuskegee, Alabama, where it was founded, the NBL operates internationally with an office in Cape Town, South Africa, and regionally in Atlanta, Detroit, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. This extensive network enables the NBL to provide critical tools, resources, and advocacy to ensure Black businesses thrive locally and globally. As the NBL approaches its 125th quasquicentennial anniversary in 2025, it proudly serves over 120,000 members nationwide and collaborates with 125+ Fortune 500 companies, public sector organizations, and private institutions. Expanding its influence into South America and the Caribbean, the NBL continues to lead the charge for economic equity and inclusion for Black enterprises worldwide. The NBL’s flagship initiative, the Black Economic Freedom: Digitize 1 Million Black Businesses Campaign, exemplifies its commitment to equipping Black entrepreneurs for a tech-driven, inclusive future. With a legacy of advocacy, innovation, and transformation, The National Business League remains a cornerstone of Black economic empowerment, honoring its history while shaping a prosperous future.
