About The Neighborhood House of Long Island
The Neighborhood House believes that all people living with loss, especially children, deserve a special place where they can connect with others, receive the support and help they need to heal, and discover their own strength and resilience. It is our mission to provide support groups to individuals and families struggling in the aftermath of loss so that they can grieve at their own pace. We aim to restore hope, and provide a community of kindness, respect and compassion. The Neighborhood House is also dedicated to providing community programs to enhance support for young people and adults, in an effort to reduce the number of deaths by suicide and drug overdose. We work with school districts to provide motivational guest speakers for students, and also have partnered with local agencies to offer workshops for the community on a variety of topics. The Neighborhood House was created by community members concerned about the epidemic of people dying by suicide and drug overdose, and the absence of hope that is permeating our society. As professionals who work with bereaved individuals in a variety of fields, we know that grieving can be isolating and lonely, and very often it is not understood or supported. We set out to create a place where people can come together with others also grieving a loved one and learn about normal grieving, realize their own strength and capacity for growth, and begin to live again with hope.
