About The New Zealand Whisky Collection
Award winning Whisky from the heart of Otago. Whisky distilling in New Zealand was born in the 1830’s when Scottish settlers arrived in Otago. The industry flourished in the region until the 1870’s when onerous government regulations effectively shut it down. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that the distilling industry gradually re-emerged and in 1974 the Willowbank Distillery in Dunedin was opened - producing popular whiskies like Wilsons, 45 South and Lammerlaw. However in 1997 the new owner Fosters closed down the distillery and hundreds of barrels of Cask Strength Whisky were auctioned. W & D Preston purchased a large amount of the whisky, which was transferred to Oamaru. Realising the value of these exceptionally rare drams, The New Zealand Whisky Collection was founded and the company bought the remaining 80,000 litres of this high-quality spirit from the Prestons. Since 2010 this precious Whisky has been residing in our seaside bonded store in Oamaru where it has been bottled and labelled under our own brand “The New Zealand Whisky Collection”. Our intention was always been to re-start whisky production in Otago. The dream finally came true in 2019, when our new distillery was installed in Speight's Brewery in Dunedin. Production commenced and the sweet spirit has been flowing in the city since February 2021. History has been revived and we are proud to be building the future of New Zealand Whisky. Join us on this new adventure!
