About The Old Tavern Preservation Society

The purpose of The Old Tavern Preservation Society is to preserve and protect The Old Tavern, in Unionville, Ohio, through community education, fund-raising efforts, and restoration projects aimed at re-establishing the Tavern, and its grounds, as a destination in our community and to ensure its existence for future generations. The Old Tavern is recognized as Ohio's oldest surviving tavern, and celebrated its 220th year, in 2018. The Old Tavern is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Tavern served as a frontier lodge, depot, and post office. During the early 19th century, it functioned as a "station" on the Underground Railroad. The Old Tavern hosted many Civil War-era socials, in its elaborate ballroom. In addition, it served as a dining venue for the likes of Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and other prominent members of the Industrial Age. During the 20th century Roadside Era, America’s early automotive period, the Tavern served as a dining and lodging destination. Since then, the historic tavern has served families and the community as a venue for special occasions, celebrations, and holiday events. The Old Tavern Preservation Society is committed to the rehabilitation and restoration in order to preserve this historic landmark. The revitalized Tavern will eventually serve as a state-of-the-art educational, community, arts, and social events center, which honors and preserves the Tavern's history and the history of the region. The New Tavern will be a one-of-a-kind facility serving a variety of community needs for Northeast Ohio.
