About The Philonomosian Society of Georgetown University
The Philonomosian Society of Georgetown College was established on January 8, 1839. The Society’s purpose was, as articulated in 1845, to promote eloquence and to acquire an accurate knowledge of history and of the leading social and political questions of the day. Its motto, “Lex, Libertas, Salusque Gentis,” translates to “Law, Liberty, and the People’s Wellbeing” and is indicative of a strong relationship between debate and congeniality. This organization was marketed as a dynamic, inclusive debating society throughout the 19th century. It maintained a strong presence on campus until renamed the “College Debating Society,” after which it went dormant in 1932. We now revive a historic and storied society intending to provide Georgetown University with a great debating society, improved and adapted to modern times. Our nimble debate format allows every voice to be heard and no questions to go unanswered. By dividing our membership into five Cohorts - Progressive, Liberal, Independent, Federalist, and Tory - we will ensure challenging debate and a diverse, multi-partisan community. Please join us Wednesday nights from 8:00-9:45 p.m. in the McDonough School of Business to be part of this revolutionary mission. Nomos!
