We have over 30 years of experience working with families in the legal system in Fort Worth and Tarrant County, Texas. We are one of the first firms in the area to use Collaborative Law as a process for peacefully and privately resolving divorces and other family issues. Instead of automatically going to court for rulings, we usually recommend using the Collaborative law process. There would be a series of private, relatively short meetings where we constructively work through the issues in the case. We start by identifying the needs of each party, collecting documents and other information on the issues, and then generate options to consider for solutions. The parties get to create and choose their own terms of settlement. The Collaborative process focuses on the future and does not spend time assigning blame and attacking each other. When there are children involved, we normally have a neutral therapist with experience in children's divorce issues to help the parties create their own customized parenting plan. It's a great way to help each parent get the best deal possible and avoid the damaging personal battles that often occur in court fights over children. When there are significant assets, we normally bring in a neutral financial professional (FP) who works directly with the parties to gather, organize and analyze the financial information. The FP also leads the joint meeting financial discussions which the attorneys attend and where the decisions are made about how to divide up the assets. If we believe, after some investigation, that Collaborative Law is not appropriate for a case, we will litigate. Sometimes, we have no choice when the other side hires a non-Collaborative lawyer.
