About Major General Arnold L. Punaro, USMC (Ret.) Major General Punaro started his military, government, and business careers as a second lieutenant Marine infantry platoon commander in Vietnam. He concluded his service in uniform as a Major General after 35 years. During this time, he served in the U.S. Senate for 24 years, including 14 years as staff director of the Armed Services Committee for Sen. Sam Nunn. Punaro worked in industry as an executive vice president at SAIC for 14 years. He has served on and chaired numerous boards and commissions, including the Independent Commission on the National Guard and Reserve, the Secretary of Defense’s Reserve Forces Policy Board, the Defense Business Board, and the Independent Commission on the Security Forces of Iraq. He is serving his second term as chairman of the National Defense Industrial Association. Punaro is CEO of The Punaro Group, a Washington-based firm specializing in national security. He has been consistently recognized by Defense News as one of the 100 most influential individuals in U.S. Defense. He is the author of two books: "On War and Politics: The Battlefield Inside Washington’s Beltway" and "The Ever-Shrinking Fighting Force."
