About The Quay Climbing Centre Limited
The Quay Climbing Centre is part of the Quay Climbing Centre Group. Based in Exeter since 2011, the company is independently owned and runs three of the South West's premier climbing experiences across two locations in the city. The Quay Climbing Centre was the first roped climbing gym to be set up in Exeter and is based in the city's Old Electricity Building. The centre boasts one of the UK's best lead climbing walls alongside top rope climbing - with routes set for climbers of all levels. In October 2011 the team, working in partnership with Entre-Prises UK Ltd, opened Europe's first Clip 'n Climb alongside the more traditional roped walls. This brought 'fun climbing' to the UK and Europe for the first time - a concept developed in New Zealand where participants can enjoy climbing on a range of brightly designed climbing elements using auto belay devices to reduce the technical requirements involved in traditional climbing. The brand is well established in the city and there are now Clip 'n Climb centres across the UK. In December 2024 the company opened Boulder Exe, a national class boulder gym in Exeter city centre, just 10 minutes walk from The Quay. The centre offers over 950 square metres of bouldering across two floors, with an IFSC accredited competition wall ('The Titan' - a replica of the wall used in Paris 2024), a board zone featuring the South West's only fully articulating Kilter Board and Tension Board 2 alongside the classic Moonboard and a full S&C gym, yoga studio, physiotherapy space and licensed bar and café. Together these venues bring a national class climbing and bouldering training opportunities to the Southwest and have created a community space for the growing number of adults and young people taking part in the sport.
