About The S.A.F.E. Center
In 1978, three individuals assessed the domestic violence needs in Buffalo County and formed the Task Force on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. This was renamed in 1985 and is now known as The Spouse/Sexual Abuse Family Education (S.A.F.E.) Center. In addition to serving Buffalo County, the counties of Franklin, Harlan, Kearney and Phelps were added to the service area. The Center had small beginnings with just a part-time Director and part-time staff and has now grown, with time and need, to a staff of 8 full-time and 12 part time employees. In addition to staff, volunteers and community members assist the agency through various ways which shows an unbelievable commitment to the vision and mission of The Center. The mission of The S.A.F.E. Center is to provide free and confidential services for those affected by dating violence, domestic violence, stalking, sexual assault, and sex trafficking while bringing awareness and prevention efforts to all individuals across South Central Nebraska. In the early years of The S.A.F.E. Center services were provided to approximately 20 women per year and now over 600 women, men, and children access services in person and over 2,000 crisis calls are received every year. Each year the number of individuals and families seeking assistance varies, not due to a rise in domestic or sexual violence, but due to the changes in society that have enabled more people to learn about available services. Clients report that they greatly value the confidentiality, support and nonjudgmental services they receive at The S.A.F.E. Center.
