About The Sloth Conservation Foundation
The Sloth Conservation Foundation (SloCo) is a registered non-profit organization founded in 2017 by Dr. Rebecca Cliffe. Based in the South Caribbean of Costa Rica, SloCo is dedicated to protecting sloths in the wild through scientific research, community outreach and conservation initiatives. To achieve this, SloCo develops long-term community-based solutions that target both human and sloth populations, with the goal of developing sustainable and mutually beneficial ways for people and sloths to coexist. Research: Despite their extraordinary popularity, sloths are still poorly understood. Key to ensuring their survival is understanding their unique needs. SloCo conducts research on the ecology, genetics, and physiology of sloths and publishes the results in open-access peer-reviewed journals to further our understanding of these enigmatic creatures. Education: Locally and internationally, SloCo strives to inspire curiosity and empathy for sloths by appreciating their fascinating qualities and role in the ecosystem. We teach responsible tourism, break myths about these misunderstood animals, and educate local school children about sloths and how to advocate for them. Community-based conservation: We work with local property owners and community members to promote the protection rather than the exploitation of wildlife. Together we strengthen and grow a local economy based on the principles of sustainable ecotourism. Contact us at: contact@slothconservation.org
