About The Society of Australian Golf Course Architects
The Society of Australian Golf Course Architects (SAGCA) was formed in 1989 by a group of Australian golf course architects with the like minded purpose of forming a society of fellow professionals, with the intent to meet regularly to exchange ideas and experiences, encourage the highest standard of golf course design and construction, and further advancing the status of their golf course architecture. Duly formed, constituted and recognised by Golf Australia (formerly Australian Golf Union) and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, the Society of Australian Golf Course Architects flourishes today headquartered at Golf Australia, Melbourne. Meetings take place on a regular basis at selected golfing venues around Australia. High on every agenda are the topics of Sound Environmental Design, Safety in Design, and advancement of Modern Technology and impact on old and new golf courses. Both new and existing golf courses will not be able to escape environmental scrutiny and as suitable land for golf becomes a more precious resource, its use will require a complete appreciation and understanding of detailed environmental planning and landscape management issues with careful construction techniques and landscape rehabilitation methods becoming an imperative. In addition, the SAGCA aims to encourage the advancement of the game of golf by highlighting the health benefits of the game, the social interaction the game facilitates and the importance of golf courses as green open spaces – especially in our cities.
