About The Steamship Sir Walter Scott
The steamship Sir Walter Scott has been sailing on Loch Katrine for over 100 years, our unique single screw steamship has captivated visitors for over a century. On this page we are going to share the experiences of the maintaining a historic vessel and the stories of the people who work on her. We want to network to share our experiences, knowledge and learn new skills all to aid in preservation of the SS Sir Walter Scott. Employment oppertunities will also be advertised on the page, we are always looking for appropriately skilled people, especially boat handers and experienced steam engineers. Named after Scotland’s much loved poet and author Sir Walter Scott, our steamship is one of Scotland’s major visitor attractions. Sitting at 110 feet long and 19 feet wide, the Sir Walter Scott welcomes thousands of keen adventurers on board every year. Built by Denny Bros Ltd at Dumbarton, on the River Clyde, the steamship Sir Walter Scott’s journey to Loch Katrine was not an easy one. She was meticulously dismantled before being transported with love and care by barge to Inversnaid on Loch Lomond. From there, she continued on her epic journey to Stronachlachar by horse-drawn cart! Still in pieces, it was by the Loch Katrine shores that the beautiful and famous steamship Sir Walter Scott was reassembled and finally welcomed to her new home. Since her maiden voyage in 1900, the steamship Sir Walter Scott has gone through a number of changes. She still has her original Matthew Paul & Co triple expansion steam engine, though 2007 marked the last year of her use of coal as fuel, and the steamship’s two Cochran Wee Chieftain boilers and in 2009 we added an enclosed deck cabin suitable for all ages and abilities.
