About The Suburban Newspaper
The Suburban newspaper was founded on March 1, 1963, in Sophie Wollock's basement on Davies Avenue in Côte Saint-Luc. Wollock vowed at the time that the paper would be uncompromising in reporting the news and getting the truth out to the public. In subsequent years, The Suburban would expand its coverage and launch additional editions in the surrounding communities, including Hampstead, Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Côte-des-Neiges and Snowdon, Westmount, Town of Mount Royal, and Saint-Laurent. It also spread to the West Island in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Beaconsfield, Kirkland, and Point Claire, and north into Chomedey, Laval. The Suburban expanded even further in the 2000s to include an east-end edition that covered in Saint-Leonard and Rivière-des-Prairies, as well as going west to Vaudreuil-Dorion and south to LaSalle and Verdun. The Wollock family owned the newspaper until 1987, when it was purchased by the Sochaczevski family, who own it to this day. The Suburban has won numerous Quebec, Canada-wide and international awards for its top-notch editorials, news coverage, sports reporting, photography, opinions, community activism, feature stories and editorial cartooning. The Suburban is a repeat winner in the Quebec Community Newspaper Awards’ (QCNA) best overall newspaper category, and the first Canadian winner of the Suburban Newspapers of America’s (SNA) best community service award. The Suburban has also kept up with the times by continually implementing new innovations, including putting the entire newspaper online as a digital e-edition, and expanding its website to include much more content, including videos and webcasts. Today, The Suburban has a print circulation of 50,000 copies and is the largest English-language newspaper in Quebec. To advertise in The Suburban, call 514-484-1107.
