About The Summer Camps Trust UK
We believe that a week or so a year spent in a good residential summer camp gives children and teenagers from all backgrounds (and the young adults who work with them as leaders), a uniquely happy experience of community living, and also a whole raft of important benefits, mental, physical, educational and developmental. Only 2% of the UK’s children currently take part in Summer Camps every year, approximately 225,000. Our aim is to highlight the benefits that summer camps can have for young people and raise the profile of well-run residential summer camps in Britain, so that more young people may benefit from these remarkable opportunities. At a time when many children are unhappy, dependent on screens, or lacking opportunities to run about and play in green fields, we believe that a national system of good summer camps could play a crucial role in helping to rediscover some “real childhood”. The Trust is run by a Board of Trustees of summer camp experts with a broad and comprehensive knowledge of summer camp provision in the UK. The board includes representatives from each of the main political parties and has wide and enthusiastic support in the educational and outdoor industries. Our members represent a range of exceptional residential holiday providers, outdoor educators, and non-profits, who are uniting in the goal of training young adults to be camp leaders who provide positive role models for the children attending camp. The Summer Camps Trust would like to hear from people who support its aims and could help to achieve them, by spreading the word about summer camps and the benefits they bring, by getting articles in the press or mentions on radio and TV, by donating money, by getting MPs or opinion formers on board, by offering PR or fundraising skills, or just by telling as many people as possible about summer camps and how wonderful they are for children and young people.
