About The Teachers' Institute
In 2024 we are launching a new school-based initial teacher education (ITE) programme in partnership with 11 secondary schools in Tāmaki Makaurau | Auckland. This postgraduate programme will enable teacher trainees to gain teacher registration in a year while they are based day-to-day in one of the schools in the Teachers’ Institute community. The programme is designed to be accessible for those who haven’t previously considered teaching as a career. It is school-based, which means that our teacher trainees will be a part of the daily life of their school right from the beginning. This will provide the opportunity to build connections, apply theory to their practice, and work directly with rangatahi (young people) every day while studying with The Teachers’ Institute. Through our work we aim to: * Increase the number and diversity of people who choose to join the teaching profession in Aotearoa New Zealand schools. We accomplish this by identifying and supporting individuals who may have never considered teaching as a career path. Our focus is to help them achieve registered teacher status. * Deliver in-person and online learning and development opportunities to support the growth of these and other teachers so that they can provide outstanding teaching for all students in Aotearoa New Zealand schools. * Grow a community of schools committed to this kaupapa and who see value in working together towards achieving these goals. Applications to join the 2025 cohort, which will start the programme in January 2025, will open in mid-2024.
