About The Trade

The Trade is a work and life-preparatory experience for young adults in search of connection, purpose, and a path to independence. Based on a classic apprenticeship model, our apprentices will spend their days helping run The Mountain—a 2,000-acre sustainably managed land trust in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, whose mission for more than forty years has been to connect people and nature in ways that educate, heal, and inspire. The Mountain boasts a wellness resort, a nature-education and adventure-learning center, and miles of groomed trails for mountain biking, hiking, and back-country skiing. During their time at The Trade, apprentices live, work, and play as full members of a supportive community with an inspiring mission. They work alongside our permanent staff (link to bios) of tradespeople and professionals as paid members of The Mountain team, gaining real work experience in everything from carpentry, to forestry, to hospitality management, while building their resume and accumulating a “transition fund” for their launch into independence. Along the way, apprentices learn life by living life, acquiring the confidence and life skills necessary for independence.
