The Travellers Rest was originally built in 1860 and was made up of two small rooms, these are now at the centre of the inn. David Ellams built the pub and ran it for many years and local census records show his wife Ada is still in charge in 1928 and 1939. The garden was converted into a bowling green (now the car park) at a cost of £54, 7s 2d. All the sandstone used in making this came from the nearby quarry. The total cost of materials being only 5 shillings. The old stables were once used as a darts room. For many years before this there was an ale house on the same site and the barrels of beer were rolled around the back of the cottage next door for storage. People could brew and sell beer from their own house and this was quite common in the early 1800’s. If you walk up the hill past the Travellers Rest you’ll see a cottage called The Old Ale House. This was the original site of the pub when it was just an ale house run from a dwelling and it used to be called The Rag and Louse. The building you see now was built by David Ellams. The pub has been run by cousins Bob and Roy since August 2018. They have redecorated and added the beer garden you see now behind the pub. They have also recruited a great, friendly and welcoming team and continue to serve great beer, gin, wine and fantastic home cooked food.
